How to Determine the Talker ID Code on an NMEA
The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) is a group that was founded by marine electronics dealers with the purpose of strengthening business associations. This association led to the creation of uniform standards for watercraft data communication as computing began to advance. NMEA defines a communication standard called the NMEA 0183 standard. This standard defines the protocol used to send signals between marine devices and includes a "Talker ID" data element that can be decoded into ASCII text form.

1
Install your NMEA-compliant device in your watercraft following the manufacturer's instructions, then power it on.
-
2
Wait to receive a transmission. The device should inform you when it has received a new message.
-
-
3
Look for the "View Code" or "View Source" button on the device. This will show you the raw data provided by the NMEA transmitter.
-
4
Look at the fourth line. The first three are header information that helps the NMEA device to identify it is a NMEA coded transmission. The fourth line contains text. This can be an ID number, a name, or whatever the sender chose to put on their transmission. This entire line is the ID.
