Halloween is a festive day for all ages, when people get to branch out and express themselves with costumes in ways they normally wouldn't. It arguably ranks next to New Year's Eve in terms of celebratory magnitude. Given the nature of the holiday, theme parties tend to be the norm, thus more planning is in order. 1
Decide on a theme for your party. Much depends on how many people you expect to show up. If you anticipate a smaller gathering, a more narrow theme can work well. For example, Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Addams Family are popular staples. At these parties, everyone has to dress as a character from the respective movies. However, if you have a larger, more broad base of invites, you may want to stick with the general theme of costumes and spooks.

2
Purchase decorations. The actual decorating itself will happen closer to the time of the party, but with your theme in place, you should figure out what to buy and where to put it. Props are important for Halloween parties; don't be shy with your purchases. You are trying to establish a vibe that suits the holiday.

Set a menu. Most Halloween parties don't involve sit-down meals; appetizers and finger food will suffice. It is important that you select food that is easy to prepare and easy on your wallet. Also, keep in mind that decor is essential here as well. For instance, most major candy brands and bakeries offer a wide array of treats that are in the spirit of the holiday. If you live in an area that receives a large amount of trick or treaters, be sure to have plenty of candy for them as well.

Make invitations. Include all of the basic information such as time, place, what to bring and directions. Whether or not to make costumes mandatory is up to you, but the more who are dressed up, the merrier the event will be. Another thing is to make sure that the invitations themselves are jazzed up with Halloween decor. You don't have to be excessive or spend too much money, but it does offer a nice touch that can get people excited about your party.

5
Select your costume. You are the host and the master of ceremonies, and your costume should stand out. Get creative and remember that there are no rules, other than to have fun.
