How to Crochet a Pair of Mittens for a Toddler for Beginners
Mittens are both fashionable and functional. They come in a variety of patterns, colors and sizes, making them the perfect accessory for a number of outfits. They also keep the hands warm during cold winter months. The best part is that once you have experience making one pair of mittens, you can easily make many others for yourself or for others as gifts. Using Lion Brand Yarn's (see Resources) pattern for family mittens, crocheting a pair of mittens for a toddler is an easy process that requires only a few items.
Things You'll Need
- One ball worsted weight red yarn
- One crochet hook size G-6
- One crochet hook size H-8
- One package large-eye blunt needles -- set of 6

1
Begin by first checking the gauge to make sure you are working with the correct needle. With the larger hook, chain 12 and crochet 12 rows of single crochet stitch. Measure this length to make sure it is approximately 4 inches. If it is not, switch to a smaller hook and repeat the process. Test different needles to ensure you have the correct size.

Chain 8 stitches once you have the correct needle size. This will form the cuff of the mittens. From the second chain on the hook, single crochet stitch across and then turn. For the next 12 rows, begin each row with a chain 1 followed by single crochets across the row. Repeat this process until the end of the row and then turn. At the end of the 12th row, change to a smaller hook to chain one. Don't turn.

Progress to working on the palm area by continuing with the ribbed pattern. Single crochet stitch on the right side 13 times before turning to the wrong side. Single crochet stitch across and make three increases that are spaced evenly. An increase is made by performing 2 single crochet stitches in 1 crochet loop and then turning. At the end of the row, you should have 16 stitches. For the next six rows, chain 1 and single crochet, turning at the end of each row.

Shape the top of the mittens by executing the following pattern from Lion Brand Yarn for family mittens (see Resources): Round 1: Chain one, single crochet two together. Single crochet in next seven stitches. Single crochet two together. Single crochet in next eight stitches. Single crochet two together and turn. Next round: Chain one and [single crochet two together. Single crochet in next four stitches. Single crochet two together.] Repeat instructions in brackets two times and turn. Next row: Chain one and single crochet in each single crochet across and turn. Next row: Chain one and single crochet in each single crochet across and turn. Next row: Single crochet two together all the way across row and turn. Next row: Chain one and single crochet in remaining stitches. Leave about a 10-inch tail, which you will then weave through the stitches to secure its hold so the stitches don't unravel.
Thumb Shaping

Face the mitten right side up. Use the larger hook to work on the thumb. Skip first single crochet row after ribbing, then join the yarn to attach the thumb to the mitten. You can join the yarn by performing a slip stitch between the second and third rows on the side edge. Chain one and single crochet as joining and in next three rows. Leave the last two rows free on opposite side of mitten. Single crochet in four rows.

Continue with the stitching process by single crocheting Round 1 in seven stitches and then single crocheting two stitches together. For Round 2, single crochet in six stitches and single crochet two together and repeat for the next round. The following rounds will involve a single crochet two together around and single crochet remaining five stitches. Repeat this until you finish the last round, at which point you will cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave the tail through the stitches until it disappears.

Sew the side seams together with the tails, and weave the ends into the stitches to finish the mitten.
