Forget the passé ghosts and goblins this year. Instead, crank up your imagination and create a costume that will be the talk of the town. You can either modify a costume you bought or create something really bizarre from scratch. Whatever you chose, go all out.

From Quick Guide: Create a Costume
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spider Webbing
  • Fabric Paints
  • Wigs
  • Gags
  • Voicemaster Changers
  • Hobby Paintbrushes
  • Halloween Makeup Kits
  • Bedsheets
  • Sewing Supplies
  • White Gloves
  1. Step 1

Toss out any clichés immediately. Forget anything related to traditional Halloween costumes, such as witches, werewolves and monsters.

  2. Step 2

Play off common words, titles or phrases in unexpected ways. For example, a doctor's outfit with chili peppers pinned to it is 'Dr. Pepper.' A surfer costume covered with fake spider webbing is a 'Web surfer.'

  3. Step 3

Make a list of themes that are unique to you. Play off your name, a nickname, a personal legend or an unusual physical attribute.

  4. Step 4

Shop at thrift stores. These treasure troves are home to some of the most unusual and utilitarian clothes and accessories.

  5. Step 5

Use common household items to transform your look. Burn a piece of cork and rub it on your face for a 5 o'clock shadow, or use eyelash glue to attach fake fur to your face for a beard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider dyeing old clothes or accessories to fit your costume. You'll save money and cut down on shopping time.
  • Surf the Web, watch cartoons or check out your local bookstore for ideas to help spark creativity.

on 1/25/2006 A few years ago, I was a candle. To do that, I took a tunnel off an old play tent and cut out holes for my arms, the tunnel also had a string to close up the ends. I then added some red and yellow foam on a cardboard strip as the flame, and voil.

on 1/25/2006 For the past two years, I went as a calculator. Simply take a big piece of felt (or stiff fabric, a box will work too) and fold it in half, and cut a hole in it for your head. then, on smaller pieces of felt, paint the numbers. Then, simply sew up the sides of the big piece of felt, and sew (you can try to hot glue) the numbers to it.

on 11/22/2005 This is a goofy idea for guys I thought of a few hours ago: Where a button-down long sleeve shirt. Where a white sleevless undershirt over it. Where a pair of slacks, where comidically themed boxer-shorts over said slacks. As for shoes, where a pair of old socks that you don't mind destroying over your shoes. A goofy costume that you can do for free or extremely cheap!

on 11/22/2005 I wore this Halloween costume last year, and I won 1st place. Wear a solid colored sweat-suit (preferably black, green, or purple). Using face paint, paint your face green. Put your hair in a ponytail and, using colored hair spray, spray your hair green. Get a fake clump of leaves and attach them to your pony tail. Lastly, blow up balloons and safety pin them all over your body, both front and back. When I dressed as this, I wore a jacket that I could easily take off (if I needed to) without popping the balloons.
