How to Make Handspun Scarves
There is a certain amount of personal satisfaction for the crafter when she is responsible for every step of her project including the materials. To make a handspun scarf, you need to obtain a few simple tools to make the yarn. These include purchasing roving, the processed fibers from which the yarn will be made, and a spindle. Spinning the yarn will take time, but it doesn't take too much effort. Knitting yarn you have spun yourself can give your project that extra level of care and meaning to the recipient of your gift.
Things You'll Need
- Roving (fiber)
- Length of yarn (about two feet)
- Spindle
- Knitting needles
- Yarn needle or crochet hook

1
Take your length of yarn and tie a knot in the end, joining it together. Take your roving and coil it into a wide circle, about a foot in diameter. Place this roving around the top of your left arm if you are left handed, and your right arm if you are right handed.

2
Take the knotted length of yarn and attach it towards the top of the long end of your spindle by creating a Roman knot. Twist this yarn and then thread it through the eyelet on the very top of the spindle. Take a small length of roving and put it through the loop that is now through the eyelet. Twist this roving onto itself to secure it.

3
Roll the long end of the spindle down and let it spin while you hold the roving about one foot above the eyelet, working from your inner thigh to your knee. When it stops, move your hand up the roving and allow the twist from the yarn to travel upwards. Move your hand one foot down the roving and repeat, always working from the inside of your thigh to your knee so you keep a consistent spin. Keep at it till you have about three feet of spun yarn.

4
Detach the original loop of yarn and wind it along with your newly spun yarn around the long end of the spindle. This is where your spun yarn will be "stored" until you are finished spinning all the roving.

5
Continue using this method until you are at the end of the roving. Take the yarn off of the spindle and knit your scarf as you normally would in whatever pattern you prefer.
