Instructions

    • 1

Place dry ice in a bucket, using tongs, and cover it with water. Use approximately two parts of water to one part of ice. The warmer the water, the thicker the fog will be. Continue to add more ice and water as the smoke dissipates. This will create a scary, fog-like atmosphere.

    • 2

Fill surgical gloves with water, tie them closed and freeze them to make severed hands. Add a drop of red food coloring for a bloody look. Make severed fingers by filling the tips of the gloves with water and then tying off the base of the hand. Freeze the gloves, and then peel off the fingers. Use the fingers as ice in guests' drinks. Make random-shaped organs by filling small balloons with water or different colored juices and freezing them.

    • 3

Cut silhouettes of people, crows, witches, monsters or just large hands out of black poster board. Place them in the windows and mirrors. Shine a light behind the silhouettes in rooms that will not be used during the party, so they can still be seen from outside as guests arrive.

    • 4

Tie four pieces of thick black wool around black pom-poms to create homemade spiders. Hang them from the ceiling with clear fishing line or dental floss. Set other spiders around the house in dark corners or in the candy or chip bowls.

    • 5

Add red food coloring and a few drops of milk to corn syrup to make a batch of fake blood. Dip your hand in the mixture and press it on the bathroom mirror, or run your fingers down the inside of the shower doors.

    • 6

Dye sheets in a bathtub full of warm water with tea bags. Dry them completely and then cover all the furniture in the house with the sheets, to create an abandoned haunted house feel.

    • 7

Dim all the lights to give your decorations more impact. Replace overhead lights with colored light bulbs; use candles or tiny strings of lights to cast interesting shadows. Create mysterious glowing eyes by using glow sticks with a small circle stickers placed in the center of the tip. Set the eyes in pairs within potted plants, on dark staircases or in the cupboards.

Tips & Warnings

  • Set dry ice behind a couch, or in another inaccessible place. Do not touch dry ice with your bare hands; use tongs or thick gloves.
