How to Paint the Walls a Wine Color

Wine red is a rich, bold color that will give any room a more romantic atmosphere. While this color is traditionally used in dining rooms, as wine red evokes feelings of hunger, it can easily be used to paint a bedroom for a more dramatic look. Painting the walls in your home wine red is very easy to do and will change the entire look of the space. Since this shade is very dark, it is unlikely you will need to apply a coat of primer prior to painting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Move all of the furniture in the room so that it is either in the center of the room or out of the room entirely. This will prevent the furniture from being damaged during the painting process. Take down any wall hangings or other decor items on the walls.

    • 2

Clean the walls with a damp rag so that there is no dust, residue or dirt on the current paint. This will ensure that the wine red paint applies evenly to the walls and has an even appearance when it dries.

    • 3

Lay a dropcloth down to protect the floor from paint splatter. Line the dropcloth up with the bottom edges of the walls to provide maximum coverage.

    • 4

Tape off the top edges of the walls as well as any electrical outlets using the painter's tape.

    • 5

Pour the wine red paint into the basin of the paint tray. Roll the pad of the paint roller through the paint so that it is thoroughly covered, then roll the pad across the textured part of the tray to remove any excess paint.

    • 6

Apply the paint to the walls using the paint roller by rolling the pad in an up-and-down motion. If you are unable to reach the top portion of the wall, you may need to use an extender that attaches to the paint roller handle. Apply the paint in smooth, even strokes.

    • 7

Use the paint brush to paint the edges of the walls and around the outlets in areas you cannot reach with the paint roller.

    • 8

Allow the paint to dry for several hours. Check the finished product and look for any areas where the original color is showing through or where the dried paint looks uneven. If there are any areas that need to be touched up, go over them with another coat using either the paint roller or paintbrush.

Tips & Warnings

  • Matte finish will not reflect any light and will be slightly dull in appearance when the paint dries. Satin and glossy finishes will have a shiny appearance when dry and will reflect light, causing the space to look brighter. Choose the finish you want to use when purchasing your paint.

  • Latex-based paint has less odor than oil-based paint and dries faster. But oil-based paint also has a harder finish and will retain color longer.

  • If you decide to use oil-based paint, it is best to leave the windows in the room open to provide ventilation from the fumes.
