How to Trace Back a Restricted Call

When you receive a restricted call on your phone, it usually means that the person calling you doesn't want their number revealed. This could be a harassing caller or just someone who doesn't want you to know their number, like someone who owes your business money. In general, you can't find out who is making restricted calls to you. However, if the calls are harassing or annoying, there are steps you can take to reveal the identity of the caller.

Instructions

    • 1

Order anonymous call rejection from your phone company. If a caller dials your number from a restricted phone, they would receive a message stating you do not accept restricted calls. If they want to call you, the caller's only option would be to unblock his number before dialing you.

    • 2

Order a call trap for your line by calling your phone company's annoyance call bureau. If you are receiving repeated annoying or harassing calls, the phone company would put a call trap on your line for free. When you activate this option, you should keep a log of the dates and times of the annoyance calls. When you turn your log over to the phone company, they will check your log against their records and then turn the information over to law enforcement.

    • 3

Order call trace from your phone company if you don't meet the requirements for a call trap. A call trace will trace each individual call. Some phone companies include this service with caller ID, so if you already have that service then call trace may already be on your line.

    • 4

Dial *57 on your phone right after you receive a call from the restricted number to activate call trace. The number that called you will be traced by the phone company. You can't get the number, but the phone company will turn their records over to law enforcement should you decide to file a police report.

    • 5

File a police report, so you can identify the caller.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your phone company may require you to file a police report before activating a call trap: ask your phone company about their policy.

  • If you are threatened in any way, dial *57 to activate call trace--some companies place this feature on phones automatically--and then contact your police department immediately.
