How to Make Orange Food Coloring From Scratch
If you are tired of artificial colorings and preservatives, try the natural dark orange shade of saffron. Although saffron is an expensive spice, even a very small amount will last. People have used saffron for thousands of years to color food and textiles. Saffron has a naturally orange color and distinctive taste that can be used in soups, main courses and even in cakes. Put a pinch of saffron into a small bowl.

Mash the threads until they become powdery.

Boil 1/3 cup of hot water or milk depending on the food you are making. For cake, for example, use milk; for soup, water. Pour a very little amount of the hot liquid on the saffron.

Mix the saffron and liquid slowly and carefully.

Tips & Warnings
Saffron is a very strong colorant and it is also expensive, so do not make more food coloring than you need for each use.
Saffron stains clothes permanently. Wear gloves when touching the saffron so it does not color your fingers.
