How to Treat a Steel Knife Sharpener
Knives are used for many applications both around the house and at work. Constant use will dull a knife and necessitate sharpening. There are many types of knife sharpeners, including a steel knife sharpener or rod, and a stone sharpener. Using a steel knife sharpener to sharpen a knife is no different than using any other type of sharpener. Hold the steel sharpener firmly in your non-dominant hand, perpendicular to your body and angled slightly upward. Position your thumb and finger behind the finger guard at the end of the sharpener. Make sure your elbow is slightly bent and away from your body while holding the sharpener. Hold the knife in your dominant hand with the blade horizontal and your thumb on top of the bottom of the blade.

Set the knife on the top of the sharpener near the handle end. Angle the knife at about a 20 degree angle. Move the blade horizontally across the sharpener until reaching the end. Repeat the process about 10 to 20 times to sharpen the bottom of the knife before use.

Set the blade of the knife under the sharpener near the handle and repeat the process about 10 to 20 times to sharpen the top of the knife.

Inspect the knife to make sure it has been sharpened enough and, if necessary, repeat the process for either or both sides to get the blade of the knife to the desired sharpness.
