How to Craft Beaded Bindis

Bindis are small dots traditionally worn on the forehead of Indian women. Traditional bindis are simple crimson dots, but bridal bindis are far more elaborate, consisting of a trail of jewels stuck to the forehead. Commonly worn between the eyebrows, bindis can also be attached at the corners of the eyes and along the line of the eyebrows. Larger bindis applied to other parts of the body can even give the look of a jeweled tattoo.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a sheet of clear acetate, such as the kind sold for report covers, on a clean surface.

    • 2

Squirt a drop of non-epoxy craft adhesive on a piece of paper or paper plate.

    • 3

Grasp a single bead or jewel firmly in a pair of tweezers and dip the back of it lightly into the adhesive.

    • 4

Lay the jewel on the acetate with the glue side down. Continue adding jewels in this manner, pushing them into place with a toothpick, until you have created the bindi design you want. Allow 24 to 72 hours for the glue to dry completely.

    • 5

Trim around your bindi with sharp applique or manicure scissors. Use medical adhesive or spirit gum to attach a glass jewel bindi to your skin. Plastic jewel bindis are lighter and can often be attached with eyelash glue.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove spirit gum from your face and the back of your bindi with olive oil. Store the bindi in a plastic sandwich bag until you are ready to use it again.
