How to Get a Degree in Naturopathy

How to Get a Degree in Naturopathy thumbnail
Many colleges offer degrees in naturopathy.

Naturopathy refers to alternative medicines or therapies often used in adjunct with traditional medicine. This includes, but is not limited to, acupuncture for pain relief, herbal medicines and tinctures for a variety of ailments, and massage therapy. Because naturopathy is considered "natural," it attracts many people. This creates a demand for those with a degree in naturopathy. Though once considered merely pseudo-science, naturopathy holds a positive place in today's world and can work effectively alongside its traditional counterpart.

  1. Finding an Accredited College

Make sure it's a real school
Make sure it's a real school

Research colleges online to validate their credentials. Two of the best places to research are the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education and the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges. Colleges that are accredited nationally or regionally are recognized by the Department of Education. Validating a college helps protect future investment, as there are unaccredited colleges that offer state-approved degrees whose college credits may not be accepted by another college, and whose degrees may not be seen as anything more than a worthless piece of paper. There are several campuses across the United States that offer degrees in naturopathy, and a few campuses are located in Canada. However, only three colleges are approved by the CNME for post-doctoral residency programs: Bastyr University, National College of Natural Medicine, and Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences.

      Research state laws

Refer to your state laws and regulations regarding the practice of naturopathic medicine, or recognized degrees of naturopathy. Some states require a license to practice alternative medicine as a doctor of naturopathy.

Submit an application in person, online, or by mail. You may be able to call in your application as well. Be sure to include applicable fees.

      Verify your credentials
      Verify your credentials

Send a copy of your GED or High School diploma to the college admissions office. If you have college credits, contact any colleges attended and request them to send a copy of your official transcripts to the school as well. This will verify your credentials, and also allow the college an opportunity to review and transfer applicable credits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research other naturopaths in your area. You may even consider contacting them and discussing how they went about becoming a naturopath, and asking them to refer you to a reputable school.

  • Do not ignore state laws or regulations. Do not expect to acquire a degree in naturopathy from a diploma mill and be able to pass yourself off as a doctor. This could incur serious jail time. Or worse, you could hurt someone.

  • Understand that a degree in naturopathy is not easier because it is natural. There is serious chemistry, biology, and rules about drug-interaction that must be learned.
