How to Winterize a 5.0 Cobra Marine

Winterize your 5.0 Cobra engine in the fall to prevent costly repairs in the spring.

You can winterize your OMC 5.0 Cobra marine engine yourself. Water from the lake you are boating on is used to maintain the engine's temperature. The water pump impeller, located inside the lower section of the outdrive, supplies the engine with water. This water does not automatically drain from the engine block and must be removed to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. You can purchase the supplies you need at your local auto parts store. You should be able to complete the job in about an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the engine compartment cover on your boat. You may need to press in a release lever on each side to remove the cover.

    • 2

Remove the wing nut that secures the plastic cover on the top of the engine that is stamped with "Cobra 5.0L." Remove the cover from the engine to access the flame arrestor.

    • 3

Remove the flame arrestor from the engine by pulling it off the threaded stud to access the carburetor.

    • 4

Spray the carburetor with fogging oil. Press in each flap of the carburetor and spray the inside liberally with the oil.

    • 5

Replace the flame arrestor and the plastic cover. Thread the wing nut back onto the threaded stud and tighten it by hand.

    • 6

Locate the drain plugs on the bottom side of the engine block. Refer to your owner's manual for drain plug locations, as each model year is different. Loosen the drain plugs with a wrench and remove the plug. Use caution to avoid dropping the drain plug into the bottom of the boat. Remove each drain plug and allow the water from inside the engine to flow out before reinstalling the drain plugs and tightening them with a wrench.

    • 7

Lower the outdrive of the boat by pressing the trim button on the throttle control. Lower it as far as possible to keep the gears inside the outdrive lubricated throughout storage.

    • 8

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery by loosening the nut with a wrench. If your boat is equipped with a battery switch, turn the switch to the "off and lock" position.

    • 9

      Reattach the engine hatch cover.
