How to Engrave Tile
When tiling a bathroom or kitchen, adding an engraved tile can add a special touch. Engraved tiles can commemorate an event or just add a touch of decoration unique to the person doing the engraving. Many decorators encourage a single embellishment to tastefully add a bit of spontaneity to a project, such as a bathroom counter or splash guard. Engraving ceramic tiles can add the perfect accent to the decor of any room.
Things You'll Need
- Pattern
- Wax crayon or pencil
- Rotary tool with engraving tip
- Non-skid surface
- Water
- Ceramic tile
- Protective eye covering
- Dust mask
Instructions

Transfer the pattern to the tile by tracing with the wax crayon or pencil.

Place the tile on the non-slip surface.

Put on protective eye wear and the dust mask to protect your eyes from flying debris and your lungs from the dust created by the engraving tool.

If your rotary tool instructions do not prohibit it, place a few drops of water on the surface of the tile to prevent it from getting too hot.

Slowly use your rotary tool to make the pattern in your tile. Work from the outside edges of the pattern toward the middle. The faster the rotary tool goes, the more precise the cut on the tile.

Once cool, rinse the tile and let it dry completely before laying it with the other tiles on your surface.

Tips & Warnings
The engraved tile will need to be sealed separately if you are not planning on glossing and sealing your tiles after you lay them.

I wonder if you could wet a paint brush and brush the area you're working on too keep it wet, or does there need to be a more significant amount of water to keep it from overheating?
