How to Practice the TAKS Writing Test
Texas school students take the writing composition portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test (TAKS) in grades four, seven, 10 and 12. This test assesses how well a student has mastered the writing TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for those grades. Students should prepare for the test by familiarizing themselves with the format and expectations of the assessment, and by practicing using the writing process.

Review TAKS study guides. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) provides TAKS study guides for all grade levels on its website. These guides include a review of the writing goals and objectives on which students will be tested. The site also provide tips on how to write a successful TAKS composition.
-
2
Review past tests. TEA also publishes certain items from past TAKS tests on its website. Review the written composition portion of the test for your grade to familiarize yourself with the type of writing prompts you will encounter on TAKS.

3
Use a writing process that includes pre-writing, writing, and revision stages. A successful composition will demonstrate the student's ability to plan his essay (pre-write), create a draft, and refine the draft through edits and revisions. Practice taking an essay through the entire writing process so that you are comfortable with doing so on the test.
-
4
Write by hand in the same amount of space and time available on the test. Students take the writing test on paper. You will not be allowed to use a computer, or your own pen and paper. You will also have a set amount of time to complete this portion of the test. Practice writing your composition on a blank test document so that you can use the space and time effectively on test day.
