How to Lobby for a Tax Credit Extension
The tax credit law that gave $8,000 to home buyers has expired. If you want to lobby for an extension of the tax credit, how would you? Unlike other laws the tax credits are actually something Congress has shown a willingness to budge on. In fact, lawmakers have already issued a 3-month extension once before. Contacting your representatives is a powerful way to make a statement rather than just waiting and hoping. Here's how to lobby to extend the tax credit again.

1
Craft your message. Be as specific as you can. Back up your reasoning with facts. Remember that congressmen and senators receive hundreds of calls and letters every month. The more compelling you can make your message, the better.
-
2
Call your representatives at 1-202-224-3121. This is the Senate and House switchboard in Washington, D.C., which will allow you to contact any senator or congressman in the United States. Keep in mind, you'll probably reach a staff member, not the actual representative.

-
3
Handwrite a letter to your representative. A handwritten letter delivered to a real person is much more likely to be read and have an impact than a brief e-mail.
-
4
Organize others to do the same. Start with your friends and family members, then e-mail lists you're on. Organize meetups to get even more push behind having the tax credit extended.
