How to Set the Correct Stride for My Pedometer

How to Set the Correct Stride for My Pedometer thumbnail
Stride length is unique to each person.

Fitness equipment does malfunction at times, but operator error is more likely the issue. Your pedometer will only give you correct and reliable information if it is used properly, so you need to know how it operates. When you input the correct stride length, you get more accurate output. Some promotional or inexpensive units will not allow you to set stride length at all. Also, manufacturers and fitness professionals in general define step and stride length differently and sometimes use them interchangeably.

Instructions

Follow the pedometer instructions. Each pedometer should come with a set of instructions that explain the features of the unit and how to use it. Within these directions, you will find a section on setting stride length. If there is no explanation at all, an average stride length has already been entered and you cannot change it. To input stride length, do not guess what your measurement is, but actually calculate it. The instructions should tell you whether to measure in inches or centimeters. They also should define what "step" and "stride" mean.

Understand the difference between step and stride length. Usually, your step is defined as the distance between the heel on the right foot and the heel on the left foot when you move and take a single step. Some consider stride length equal to two steps; so the distance from the heel of your right foot to the heel of your right foot again after taking two full steps. Each person has a different step and stride length based on how they walk and body mechanics.

Calculate your stride length. To figure out your normal walking gait, you need to walk naturally. Many pedometer instructions, ask you to take 10 steps, measure the total distance and then divide by 10 to get your stride length. It helps if you take steps and someone else measures the total distance with a tape measure. If not, mark with tape a starting and end point and then measure between the two. Use a stride length calculator if you do not want to do tape measurements. You can also enter an average stride length based on your sex. For females this is about 132 centimeters and it is 158 centimeters for males according to Dave Thompson, a physical therapist's website.

Input your unique stride length into the pedometer. If you measure the distance in inches, you may need to convert this to centimeters depending upon your unit. You also may be instructed to divide a total distance number by a certain amount like ten or twelve. Enter that number into the pedometer unit and press an enter button. Some pedometers ask you to hold down a "set" button before inputting the number. Reference your instructions to be sure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your stride length can change over time for a variety of reasons including better walking and running form. Re-calculate your stride length after several months of training to see if you need to change your pedometer setting.
