How to Do the Mexican Wedding March

How to Do the Mexican Wedding March thumbnail
The Mexican wedding march is a way of celebrating a newly married couple.

Mexican weddings are known for their colorful decorations, spectacular feasts and lively dancing. One of these dances, the Mexican Wedding March (or "La Marcha de Zacatecas"), is an old tradition that is still performed in some parts of Mexico. All guests are welcome to join in this joyful, spirited celebration of the newlyweds.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a partner. As the music starts, fall into line behind the other couples and follow in a moving line behind the newlyweds. The couples move two abreast at a brisk, up-tempo pace in 2/4 time, with linked arms or joined hands.

    • 2

Form a "tunnel of hands" with the other couples, allowing the newlyweds to pass through the tunnel while pulling through those who follow behind.

    • 3

Form a heart-shaped ring around the newlyweds as they take to the center of the floor. The groom may then choose to present his bride with 13 gold coins (trece monedas de oro) before they have their first dance as a married couple.
