How to Make a Pillbox Hat for a Barbie Doll
Made popular in the 1960's by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, pillbox hats add retro style to any outfit. A pillbox hat is a circular, covered hat band that sits on top of the head. Barbie fashions are quick to make because of their small dimensions. A few stitches connect the components to make this stylish retro hat. Bright colored fabrics add to the authenticity of this era.

1
Measure the crown of your Barbie's head. Measure the crown of your Barbie's head and add 1/2 inch to this measurement.
-
2
Cut a strip of interfacing. Cut a strip of interfacing that is this length by 1 inch wide. Fold this piece of interfacing lengthwise.
-
-
3
Stitch the overlapping band into place. Form a band with this folded strip of interfacing, by overlapping 1/4-inch at the ends. Stitch in place.
-
4
Cut a 2-inch square of bright colored fabric and lay on top of the interfacing band.
-
5
Stitch the square in place around the edge of the band, stretching the material to make it tight.
-
6
Cut the excess fabric off, leaving 1/4 inch from the band edge. Make snips with your scissors in this excess fabric, every 1/2 inch. This will allow you to flatten it against the band as you finish the hat.
-
7
Cut a 1 inch bias piece of fabric, equal in length to your original head measurement.
-
8
Fold one edge under 1/4 inch and sew to the outer edge of the covered hat top. Ease the snipped sections into place under this band.
-
9
Turn the remaining edge of the band over the bottom edge of the interfacing crown. Sew to the inside of the crown band.
