How to Change the Oil Filter on a Custom V-Star 650

The Yamaha V-Star 650 is a motorcycle with various customizable features. The transmission oil filter, however, is not affected by these customizations. This makes changing the oil filter a simple job. Change the oil filter every 4000 to 5000 miles to keep it functioning properly. After this mileage the filter stops functioning properly, which can lead to heavy metal build-up in the engine and costly repairs.

Things You'll Need

• Bike stand
• Phillips-head screwdriver
• Magnetic pan
• Oil filter wrench
• Transmission oil

Instructions

1. Place the V-Star 650 in a bike stand so that it remains upright during the maintenance.

2. Take off the engine casing in the front of the bike by removing the 10 screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Place the screws on a magnetic pan so they don't get lost.

3. Find the oil filter on the transmission located on the side of the engine. The filter is a metal cylindrical device. Rotate it counterclockwise with an oil filter wrench to remove it from the engine.

4. Place a layer of transmission fluid on the rubber gasket at the top of the new filter. Position the new filter in the port. Turn it clockwise half a turn to lock it in place.

5. Reattach the engine casing and remove the bike from the stand.
