An interesting experiment involves using a fruit or vegetable to harness electricity. It might sound like something out of science fiction, but you can turn a potato or a lemon into a battery with just a few supplies. Soon, you'll be able to power a light source without going near an outlet.

Things You'll Need

  • Potato or lemon
  • Knife
  • Zinc paper clip the size of a penny
  • 1 penny
  • 2 Copper wires
  • Electrical tape
  • LED

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a potato or lemon on your work surface and carefully cut two slits into the skin on opposite sides. You may cut a piece from the bottom of the potato or lemon, flattening it so it won't roll away.

      Wrap one end of one copper wire to the zinc paper clip and the other end to the negative end of the LED. Push the zinc paper clip into one of the slits you made in the potato or lemon.

      Tape one end of copper wire to one side of the penny. Push the penny into the other slit you made in the potato or lemon. Touch the open end of the copper wire attached to the penny to the positive end of the LED, lighting it up.
