How to Remove a String Tree on a Strat

How to Remove a String Tree on a Strat thumbnail
Stratocaster is a model of electric guitar made by Fender.

Many parts of the Fender Stratocaster may be removed or replaced to customize the instrument to the player's specifications. One such part is the "string tree" which helps keep the first two to four strings firmly in place as they pass over the nut. This allows for secure string placement, but can lead to mechanical problems like string breakage due to rough-edged string trees. Whether to discard or replace them, you can remove string trees from a Strat in a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover a flat work surface with a clean towel to prevent damage to the guitar during maintenance.

    • 2

Lay the Fender Stratocaster face up on the towel.

    • 3

Unhook all strings from the underside of their corresponding string trees. This will relieve pressure on the string trees for removal.

    • 4

Unscrew the screw at the center of each string tree with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the string trees from underneath the strings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Altering the original configuration of a Fender Stratocaster can negatively impact its value. Consider the possible depreciation of the instrument before customization. Keep all original parts in case you wish to reinstall them or sell the instrument in its original condition.
