How to Tow With a 2008 Dodge Dakota 4.7V8 Quad Cab 4X4
The 2008 Dodge Dakota is touted as having the best-in-class towing capacity of just over 7,000 pounds. Properly equipped, the Dodge Dakota is a versatile towing vehicle. Things to look for when getting ready to tow are a fully equipped tow package, the proper size ball hitch for the trailer to be towed, the proper electrical connection for truck and trailer, and any needed cargo netting or restraining straps. If a receiver hitch and other towing gear are needed, U-Haul and etrailer.com are good sources for equipment. Have the hitch professionally installed.
Things You'll Need
- Fully equipped tow package.
- Ball hitch sized to the trailer. A 2" ball is most common.
- Electrical pin adapter, if needed.
- A security lock for the trailer hitch
- Cargo netting or tie-down straps, if needed.

Get Ready to Tow
-
1
If your Dakota did not come with a tow package, have one installed. Hitches and other towing parts are specific for the Dakota. U-Haul and Etrailer.com have a full line of towing equipment. Once selected, have the towing package professionally installed.
-
2
Back the truck up to the trailer that is to be towed. Lower the trailer onto ball using arm crank or manually lower trailer into place. Secure the crank handle.
-
-
3
Lock trailer hitch onto ball. Tighten and lock into place if the hitch has a locking mechanism. For added security, a key or combination lock can be used to secure trailer to the truck hitch.
-
4
Connect the electrical pin connector from the Dakota to the trailer. Use the 4-pin to 7-pin adapter if it is needed. Secure the safety chains to the truck. The chains may need to be twisted a few times to prevent them from dragging along the ground.
-
5
Check all connections between the hitch, electrical, and safety chains to ensure they are fitted correctly. Test the brake lights and turn signals on the trailer to make sure electrical connection is working.
-
6
Load the trailer with the cargo to be towed. Make sure the heaviest part of the cargo is toward the front of the trailer. Evenly distribute the rest of the cargo throughout the trailer. Secure cargo with cargo netting or tie-down straps.
-
7
Tow where you need to go.
