Do it Yourself Camper Trailer

Building your own camper can save you money.

Numerous new and used camping trailers are available, but building your own allows you to customize the camper. You can do a simple camper on a budget or you can build an intricate camper with features designed specifically to suit your needs. The camping trailer can be completed with basic tools and materials, but specialty parts will be required if a plumbing and electrical system is included. The construction process can be completed by one person, but several hands will move things along at a faster pace.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an enclosed cargo trailer that is in good condition. It is important that the trailer is not damaged, and it must be weather-tight.

    • 2

Use a sawzall to cut several windows in the trailer. Pre-order the windows from an RV dealer and install with a waterproof caulking around the edges.

    • 3

Build a box bed that doubles as a storage container. Frame the bed with 2-by-4's and use 1/4-inch plywood to cover the sides of the bed. Use 1/4-inch plywood for the top of the bed and install hinges for access to the interior. Cover the bed with a sleeping pad and use metal brackets to secure the bed to the floor.

    • 4

Build a table that will act as a kitchen and general work area. Use four 2-by-4's for the legs and use a 1/4-inch sheet of plywood for the top. Secure the legs to the floor with metal brackets. Use plastic storage containers to hold supplies beneath the table.

    • 5

Separate the table and bed with an isle. This will allow you to move about the trailer and access all of your gear without climbing over furniture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Install solar panels for electricity and install a sink with a pump and plumbing for fresh water.

  • All of the furniture must be secured to the floor of the trailer. Any unsecured items are liable to fall over while traveling.
