How to Start a LAN Campaign on "Left 4 Dead"

“Left 4 Dead” is an action horror game set in post-apocalyptic Pennsylvania. Between one and four players are thrown into zombie and monster infested levels where they must fight for survival. Released in 2008, this cooperative first person shooter offers four game modes including: campaign, versus, survival, and single player. It is possible to play offline as well, with a LAN Campaign. Below you will find the instructions for getting a “Left 4 Dead” LAN Campaign up and running on Windows 8.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Ethernet Cables
  • 1 LAN Switch
  • 2 PCs running Windows 8
  • Insert an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on each computer. Connect the other ends of the Ethernet cables to the Ethernet ports on the LAN switch.

  • Press the “Start” button on the host computer. Click “Start Search”. Type “cmd” in the space provided and press the “Enter” key. Type “ipconfig” in the Command Line Interface screen that pops up, then press the “Enter” key. This will display your LAN IP address. Write this IP address down.

  • Run “Left 4 Dead” on all of the computers being used.

  • Click the “Options” tab in the Main Menu on the host computer. Select the “Keyboard/Mouse” option. Click the “Developer Console” option to enable it. With this enabled, you can open the Developer Console anytime in the game by pressing the “grave accent” key (`) on your keyboard.

  • Type “sv_lan 1” in the space provided and press the “Enter” key. Type “sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0” followed by pressing the “Enter” key. Type “net_start” followed by pressing the “Enter” key.

  • Type “map” in the developer console to bring up the list of maps. Press “Up” or “Down” on the keyboard's arrow keys to highlight the map you want to play. Press the “Enter” key.

Tips & Warnings

  • To change the difficulty of the game, press “Escape” when the chosen map has loaded and click “Change Difficulty”. Alternately, you can type in the console “z_difficulty [difficulty]”. (Example: z_difficulty Expert) Choose between Easy, Normal, Advanced, and Expert. Be warned: Expert level is not for those with a lack of patience. Death is quite common and even the most skilled players will die multiple times each level.
