How to Store a Down Parka

How to Store a Down Parka thumbnail
Down feathers provide insulation by trapping layers of warm air.

Down parkas provide reliable insulation in extreme temperatures, yet are lighter and more resilient than many synthetic alternatives. Down feathers trap layers of air to help retain warmth and keep out the cold. To retain these insulation properties, down must be properly cared for and protected from moisture, sunlight and extended compression. Down parkas are often significantly more expensive than synthetic outerwear. With correct care they can last for many years, and offer a good return on the investment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place your parka in a cotton storage sack, or hang it loose in a closet. Do not put it in a sealed plastic bag, as condensation may occur and cause mildew.

    • 2

Keep the parka in a dry location where the temperature will remain fairly constant. If your parka gets wet, place it in bright sunlight to dry naturally. Down will not be permanently damaged by moisture, unless it is left damp for a prolonged period.

    • 3

Do not leave the parka in direct sunlight for an extended length of time. The oil from the down will begin to evaporate and compromise the parka's effectiveness.

    • 4

Wrap your parka in a loose bundle if you do not have space to hang it vertically; do not tightly compress it or weight it down with heavier items. This will flatten the down and reduce the parka's loft.
