How to Create a DES Template

How to Create a DES Template thumbnail
QuickBooks template files are used for form documents, such as invoices or receipts.

The financial software QuickBooks uses the DES file format for templates -- prepared forms that can be loaded into QuickBooks. These templates are then filled in and saved the way you would fill in and file multiple copies of paper forms. QuickBooks comes with several preloaded templates, but you can also create your own, and save them as DES files for use by other profiles or computers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open QuickBooks. Click "Lists," then "Templates."

    • 2

Press "Ctrl-N." This will begin the process of creating a new template by opening the "Select Template Type" window.

    • 3

Choose a template type. Each type contains a handful of standard fields already in place, which you'll be able to modify later. Click "OK" to bring up the "Basic Customization" window, in which you can edit your new template as if you were modifying a previously existing one.

    • 4

Click "Manage Templates" and enter a new name in the "Template Name" box. Click "OK."

    • 5

Click "OK" in the "Basic Customization" window when you're done editing your template. It will now be among the templates in the "Templates" window.

    • 6

Export your new template as a DES file by selecting it in the Templates window, clicking "Templates," and then clicking "Export." This will bring up a standard "Save As"-style dialog box in which you can save the template as a DES file anywhere on your computer.
