How to Make an Ant Farm With Gelatin

Ant farms are traditionally made using just sand. However, you can now make them using gelatin. If you don't feel like purchasing a pre-made ant farm, you can make one yourself by preparing the gelatin mixture at home, and then stocking the farm full of ants. After the preparation is complete, you can sit back and watch ants make their home in your handmade creation.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a narrow aquarium that's made of shatterproof glass or plastic. It should be able to hold about one liter. You may also find ant farm containers online, but anything narrow that fits your budget will work.

    • 2

Bring 1 liter of water to a near boil. Slowly and carefully stir in 25 grams of potassium sorbate, 1 teaspoon of white graduated sugar and 27 grams of sodium benzoate. Mix completely and bring the mix to a rolling boil. Remove it from the burner.

    • 3

Place the aquarium in your sink or tub. Fill the sink or tub with cold water and ice around the aquarium. Pour the gel mixture into the aquarium and add 3 to 4 drops of tea tree oil into the mixture. The mix will slowly start to turn into a gelatin.

    • 4

Remove the aquarium once the gelatin has thickened, and place it on a shelf or desk. Add your ants and food. Watch as the ants make paths and a colony in the gelatin.
