Plan a weekend crafting activity with your family by making a wreath with squares of material. The wreaths can be made using scraps of fabric left over from other projects, or fabric purchased to coordinate with a holiday, special occasion or your home's decor. Wreaths made with fabric squares are inexpensive and can be completed in less than an hour. Make them as gifts for family and friends or craft them as a birthday party activity for children.
Things You'll Need
- 2/3-yard fabric
- Pinking shears
- 12-inch foam wreath
- Craft glue
- Small paper plate
- Ballpoint pen
Cut a 2/3-yard length of 45-inch-wide fabric into 66, 4-inch squares using pinking shears. Use one fabric, or a combination of several coordinating designs and colors.
Lay a 12-inch foam wreath flat on your work surface. Make two piles with 16 fabric squares and two piles with 17 fabric squares. Lay them on your work surface, evenly spaced around the wreath. This will help you judge how many should be in each section.
Pour craft glue onto a small paper plate.
Lay one square right side up on your work surface. Place the point of a ballpoint pen in the center of the square. Pull the edges of the square up and around the pen. Hold the fabric in place with your fingers.
Dip the fabric covered pen point into the glue. Place the point onto the surface of the wreath. Insert the point approximately 1/2 inch into the foam. Remove the pen. The edges of the fabric square will flare out like a flower.
Insert additional squares into the wreath approximately 1/2 to 1 inch apart. Cover the side edges and top of each of the wreath's quarter sections with each pile of fabric squares.
Tips & Warnings
- Although not necessary, a rotary cutter with a pinking blade and a cutting mat will hasten the cutting of the squares.
- A new straw wreath can be substituted for a foam wreath.
- Depending on how close each square is inserted, you may have some squares left over or more may need to be cut.
