How to Repair an iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba is a disc-shaped robot vacuum that is intended for use in the home. Once its battery is fully charged, its user presses the "Clean" button on the robot, which proceeds to remove dirt and debris from floors. The Roomba vacuums entire floor surfaces, including areas under and around furniture and along baseboard edges. It is confined to the floor being cleaned by a "virtual wall." This accessory creates an electronic barrier that the robot does not cross. If the Roomba develops a fault that needs to be fixed it will emit an electronic "Uh-oh!" sound, followed by a number of beeps.

Things You'll Need

"Uh-oh" Followed by No Beeps

  • Pick the Roomba up from the floor.

  • Put the Roomba back down on the floor firmly.

  • Press the "Clean" button on the Roomba to restart the cleaning cycle.

"Uh-oh" Followed by One Beep

  • Turn the Roomba over to gain access to the robot's cleaning head.

  • Remove the Roomba brush guard. This is done by locating its two yellow tabs and pressing down on them.

  • Remove the machine's brushes and clean them, making sure all debris is removed.

  • Replace the brush guard before pressing the "Clean" button to reactivate the Roomba.

"Uh-oh" Followed by Two Beeps

  • Switch the Roomba off and turn it over.

  • Inspect the side brush for any debris that may have become clogged in it, such as string or hair.

  • Replace the Roomba side brush and reactivate the cleaning cycle by pressing the "Clean" button.

"Uh-oh" Followed by Three Beeps/Roomba Fails to Pick Up Debris

  • Switch the Roomba off and pick it up from the floor.

  • Place the Roomba on a table at a comfortable working height and remove its dustbin.

  • Empty the dustbin and place the Roomba back on the floor.

  • Reactivate vacuuming by pressing the "Clean" button.

"Uh-Oh" Followed by Four Beeps

  • Switch the Roomba off and turn it over.

  • Remove the Roomba's sidebrush using a screwdriver.

  • Move the Roomba's wheels to ensure they are spinning freely.

  • Place the Roomba back on the floor and press the "Clean" button to reactivate the vacuuming cycle.

"Uh-Oh" Followed by Five or Six Beeps

  • Switch the Roomba off and turn it over.

  • Remove any debris caught around the Roomba's front bumper and cliff sensors. Compressed air can be used for this task.

  • Check for obstructions that are preventing the Roomba's wheels from sitting up in the machine's body.

  • Place the Roomba back on the floor and reactivate vacuuming by pressing the "Clean" button.

"Uh-Oh" Followed by 10 Beeps

  • Switch the Roomba off and pick it up, as 10 beeps means it is stuck.

  • Place it on the floor in another area and reactivate vacuuming by pressing the "Clean" button.

  • Prevent the Roomba from entering the area where it got stuck by re-positioning its virtual wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always keep the Roomba's home base unit plugged in, as it transmits an infrared signal directing the Roomba back into position once vacuuming has been completed.
  • Do not use the Roomba to clean up liquid spills.
  • Do not spray water on the Roomba when cleaning the case.
  • If the Roomba gives nine beeps, contact iRobot customer support, as this indicates a sensor problem.
