How to Become a Pet Insurance Sales Representative

Dogs, cats and other pets become like family to many, so pet owners are spending more money than ever on their furry and feathered companions. Sixty-two percent of American households own a pet, and pet owners spent an estimated $12.79 billion on veterinary care in 2010 alone, according to a 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association. Also, increasing numbers of pet owners are buying pet insurance to offset the rising costs of pet care. Thus, the growing pet insurance industry can offer sales representatives the chance to build a lucrative, primarily commission-based career.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in classes geared toward the animal sciences, finance or sales and marketing, or a combination. Pet insurance companies have different requirements for their sales representatives, but most require applicants to possess a passion for and knowledge of animals and sales. Inquire with your local college or technical school and earn at least an associate's degree in finance or animal sciences, with some training in the other. Some sales positions, such as supervisors, require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related discipline.

    • 2

Gain sales experience. Participate in an internship or take a part-time job with a sales company while still a student, or seek an entry-level position as a sales representative with an insurance company or in pharmaceuticals. Any sales experience is viewed as a plus; the more, the better. Most pet insurance companies seek applicants with one to three years of sales experience.

    • 3

Develop your communication skills and become computer literate. Take online or college classes to strengthen your writing and speaking skills, and learn computer applications such as Microsoft Office (primarily Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).

    • 4

Do an online search for pet insurance companies, such as PetCare Insurance Agency Ltd., Trupanion or Pets Best Insurance. Visit each website and apply under the "Careers" or "Jobs" section. Find a phone number for the company on the website, and follow up by phone within a few days to make certain the company received your application. Ask to speak to a human resources representative, and politely request the opportunity to have an interview, either in person or by phone.

    • 5

Dress professionally, be articulate and show a passion for animals and helping pet owners during your interview. Be prepared to answer questions about pet industry statistics and the company's mission. This means you have already researched the company. Ask about franchise or exclusive territory opportunities.
