Make your own fabric cheese wedge from felt.

Toy food crafted from felt is becoming increasingly popular as a result of safety recalls on mass-produced plastic toy food. Felt food is safer for children to play with, and you can easily make some at home in a short amount of time. When you make your own fabric play food, you can be as creative and make as many different foods as you would like. Try constructing a fabric cheese wedge from felt and stuffing.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what variety or varieties of cheeses you will be making out of fabric. If you do not have any cheese in your refrigerator, take a trip to your local grocery store to look at the different varieties of cheese.

    • 2

Sketch out a pattern for your cheese wedge on a piece of cardstock or oaktag. If you do not have any at the house, recycle an old greeting card for your pattern. You will need one isosceles triangle, one rectangular piece that is the same width as the short side of the triangle, and one strip that is the same length as both sides of the triangle and the same height as the rectangle.

    • 3

Cut out your pattern pieces and trace them on cheese-colored felt. Trace two copies of both the triangle and the long side strip on the cheese-colored felt.

    • 4

Tape the triangle and the rectangle pattern piece together, with the rectangle lined up with the short side of the triangle. Trace this taped-together piece on rind-colored felt.

    • 5

Cut out all the traced pieces of felt. Using cheese-colored embroidery thread, stitch together a cheese-colored triangle and rectangle piece. Switch to the rind-colored embroidery thread and add the rind to the top of these two pieces.

    • 6

Switch back to the cheese-colored embroidery thread and add the cheese-colored side strips, followed by the bottom triangle. Leave a small hole to add the stuffing.

    • 7

Stuff the wedge with fiberfill stuffing. Stitch the hole closed. You may accent the rind or the cheese using a fabric marker if you choose, or if it is appropriate for the type of cheese you are crafting.
