How to Grow Pachira Tree

The pachira (Pachira aquatica) is an evergreen tree native to Northern Brazil. It grows 10 to 15 feet in height with an 8- to 10-foot spread in cultivation, though it can get up to 60 feet tall in the tropics, where it is generally found growing in freshwater swamps. Hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9b to 11, pachira trees bloom in large, white flowers and produce edible nuts that taste like peanuts, according to the experts with California Rare Fruit Growers. Pachira is an easy tree to care for as long as it is irrigated consistently. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the pachira tree in an area where it will get at least six hours of sun per day.

    • 2

Water the pachira often enough to keep the soil moist at all times. If you are growing it in California and parts of Florida where the winters get cold, hold off on winter watering until the top 3 inches of soil is dry.

    • 3

Apply a 3-inch layer of compost to the soil each spring. Spread it out to the drip-line. This is the only fertilizer the tree requires.

    • 4

Spread 3 inches of mulch under the tree, from 6 inches from the trunk out to the drip-line. Rake the mulch up in the spring before applying the compost. After the compost application, apply a fresh layer of mulch.
