Removal of the Exhaust Filter on a 2008 Ford Super Duty

by Russell Wood

Newer diesel engines like the ones found in 2008 Ford Super Duty trucks, use a diesel particulate filter mounted in-line on the exhaust that removes fuel particulates from the exhaust gases. The filter improves emissions and is required on all diesel vehicles sold. Some owners may want to remove this filter to increase gas mileage and horsepower. Alternatively, you may want to remove the filter to replace it with a clean one. In either case, removing the exhaust filter can be easily accomplished.

Step 1

Crawl underneath the truck and locate the filter, which is on the exhaust and has a flange with eight bolts on one end of the filter and a slip joint clamp on the other.

Step 2

Remove the exhaust hanger on the filter using the pry bar.

Step 3

Unbolt the exhaust filter from the exhaust using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the filter out of the exhaust system and out from underneath the truck.
