Instructions for Building an R2-D2 Out of Random LEGO Pieces

Legos are small plastic bricks that are stacked together to make various shapes, such as a car, boat or a spaceship. You can even a make a robot. One famous robot you can construct is R2-D2, from the Star Wars movie series. To do this, you need to follow a series of steps to complete the project. You will also need various colors of lego bricks, which include white, blue, black, red, green and gray, if available.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the character R2-D2 by watching a marathon of the Star Wars films. If you are not up to movie watching, you can find information in books, such as the "Star Wars Essential Guide to Droids."

    • 2

Draw out plans on a piece of paper. Detail how the shape of the feet and legs will look. Determine how big you want your R2-D2 to be. If you have a small supply of bricks, a small R2-D2 can be built.

    • 3

Lay four blocks close together in the shape of a square. Place two blocks in the center, to connect the four pieces together. This will be one foot for your R2-D2. Repeat this step to construct another foot.

    • 4

Attach two Legos at a time on top of each foot, to a height of six inches. Use two longer Lego bricks at the 2-inch and 5-inch marks. This will be the legs with two supports pointing inwards. Measure for the height of the legs with a ruler.

    • 5

Connect two long pieces of brick to the supports on the legs. These need to be positioned parallel to the legs.

    • 6

Construct a square from single bricks that is three to four inches wide. Leave the corners of the square open to give the illusion that it is round. Add a second row of bricks on the inside.

    • 7

Add additional layers to a height of two and a half inches; interlock the bricks to construct the bottom half of the body.

    • 8

Attach the bottom section of the body to the lower support on each leg. Add additional bricks to the top of the body to the level of the second support.

    • 9

Construct another square that is three to four inches wide. This will be the beginning of the dome for your R2-D2. Attach single bricks side-by-side along the perimeter. Attach another row that is positioned on only half of the previous row. Repeat this process until you have a dome shape.

    • 10

Set the dome on top of the lower half of the body and the second support on the legs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Expand your design if you want to construct a bigger R2-D2 model.
