There is nothing pretty about trash or the cans it sits in. If you have outdoor trash cans that are becoming an eyesore to your otherwise decorative landscape, hide them. You have several good options. The one you choose will depend on your budget as well as your personal taste.
Things You'll Need
- Trash can cover
- Trash can storage bin
- Trash can screen
- Climbing plants
Wrap a decorative trash-can cover around your can. Trash can covers work the same way table skirts do. They take the focus off of your ugly trash can and put it on the fabric sheath, which can be bold or muted. Trash can covers come in many sizes and prints.
Place your trash receptacles inside a trash-can storage bin. You can purchase a storage bin made of wood or plastic, or you can make your own. If you make your own out of wood, you can paint the outside so that it doesn't appear plain. If you are artistic enough, you can even paint a flower garden on the storage bin.
Place a privacy screen around your ugly trash cans. These screens fold out to cover your trash can on three sides, which is perfect if you store your cans against the side of your house. They might even keep trash from blowing across your yard on windy days.
Install a trellis in front of your trash cans and grow a climbing plant on it. Some excellent climbing plants include honeysuckle, ivy and trumpet vine. As the plants grow, you can guide them in and out of the trellis to completely block any view of the trash cans.
Tips & Warnings
- Trash can bins and screens will also keep wild pests from getting in your trash.
- You can substitute lattice for a trellis.
