A ceramic or glass-top stove may be a halogen light, or induction, cook top, or it may be glass with a thermostatically controlled heating unit. The most common material used to make these stove tops is Ceran, and most stoves are marked with the Ceran name in the far left corner of the flat top. Manufacturers recommend the use of metal cookware for most ceramic-top ranges; flat-bottomed pieces are essential. Give your cast iron pots away if you have a ceramic or glass top range. Cast iron is not smooth or flat on the bottom, which means that it can damage the cook top.

- Flat-bottomed pots
Use the correct pot when cooking on a ceramic top range. The pot's size should be no more than 1 inch larger in diameter than the burner. The front left burner is probably larger than the other three, so you will need to use two differently sized pots if you will be cooking on more than one burner.
Place food in the pot and the pot on the cook top. Add liquid if necessary to avoid burning the food. Less liquid will cook your food faster, since it takes less time to heat.
Turn the burner to the temperature recommended by your recipe and cook the food for the appropriate length of time. The glass or ceramic cook top may take longer than your old range.
Turn the burner off before the food is completely cooked if you plan to keep the pot on the stove. Alternatively, remove the pot of food from the cook top once the cooking time is done or your food will continue to cook even after the burner has been turned off.
Clean the ceramic top stove after every use. Cook top cleaners remove the gray or silver marks caused by metal pots on the ceramic surface. Wipe up all spills.
Tips & Warnings
- Use the ceramic-top stove only to cook. It is not a counter top, and using it as a counter may cause it to crack. It will also scratch the ceramic surface.
- Care for your ceramic cook top like it is glass and it will last you for years. Do not scoot pots on the surface and do not clean it with abrasive cleansers or scratch pads.
- Do not use non-flat cookware on your ceramic or glass cook top. It may require 30 percent more cooking time and may scratch your cook top.
- Never use aluminum foil on a glass or ceramic cook top.
- Do not use oversize pans as they may crack the ceramic or glass.
