How to Remove Lipstick Stains From Satin

Cricket Webber

Once woven only from silk, satin today can be composed of silk, nylon or polyester. Satin is common in formal wear and linens, but you can find a variety of garments made from satin. Satin is sturdy enough to wash in your washing machine, but you do need to take care when removing stains.

Satin is a soft fabric that can sustain damage easily.

Complex stains, such as lipstick, combine several ingredients. Lipstick stains are both an oily stain and a dye stain, so you must deal with each portion in order to fully remove the marks. As with any type of stain removal, take your time so you do not damage the fabric.

  1. Blot the lipstick stain with a clean cloth or sponge. Be careful not to rub the stain so you do not spread it.

  2. Spread the satin onto a flat surface. Sprinkle flour liberally across the lipstick stain.

  3. Let the flour sit on the stained satin for at least one hour. The flour helps to draw oil from the lipstick out of the satin fabric.

  4. Brush the flour away gently with a soft-bristled brush.

  5. Rub heavy-duty laundry detergent into the stain and wash as usual. Do not place the satin into the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone. If any of the lipstick stain remains, repeat the flour and wash the satin again.
