How to Stop Male Dogs From Urinating on the Wrong Things Outside

Male dogs sometimes urinate on inappropriate items.

If you own a male dog, your dog may have inappropriately eliminated on or marked outdoor objects. Male dogs often mark their territories in the form of urine. If your dog is marking on outdoor objects, chances are your dog does not recognize the objects as being incorrect to eliminate on. Your dog needs to learn what isn't appropriate. You can do this by training your dog to urinate in certain areas. Also, male dogs reduce marking behavior when they are neutered.

Things You'll Need

• Urine odor removal solution or enzymatic cleaner
• Veterinarian
• Dog repellent

Instructions

1. Clean all surfaces your dog has been urinating on, if possible, using a urine odor control solution or enzymatic cleaner.

2. Have your veterinarian neuter your male dog. This will help control the urge to mark.

3. Use dog repellent on or near inappropriate outside items. Dog repellent is available online and at pet supply and gardening stores.

4. Walk your dog on a leash to the appropriate places to urinate.

5. Praise dogs when they urinate in the appropriate place.

6. Continue to supervise your dog until he learns where urinating is appropriate. It will usually will take several weeks to several months to establish a good habit.
