How to Knit a Fruit Hat
A cute trend in children's wear is knit caps that are designed to look like pieces of fruit. With these hats, the body of the hat is stitched in a single color -- such as red for an apple cap or blue for a blueberry cap -- with a green stem stitched to the top of the hat. These colorful hats are perfect for a cool spring day, while an orange pumpkin hat says "fall weather."
Things You'll Need
- 1 skein yarn in a fruit color
- Less than 1 skein green yarn

Start with your circular knitting needle and cast on 80 stitches with your fruit-colored yarn. You should knit until the hat measures 5 inches long.

Begin to decrease the pattern by knitting 8 stitches, then knitting 2 stitches together in the first row. Repeat until the row is complete. Follow this by knitting a row all the way around. In the third row knit 7 stitches, then knit 2 together and then follow with another row knitted all the way around. Continue this pattern of reducing the number of stitches in every other row and knitting all the way around in the other rows until you are left with a circumference of 8 stitches. All together it will come to 14 rows.

Switch to the green yarn and use the regular knitting needles to knit the remaining 8 stitches for about an inch. Break the yarn and draw the end through the loops to complete your stem.
