How to Make a Tied Flannel Blanket
Flannel is a warm, lightweight woven fabric that is perfect for cozy blankets and throws. You can make a tied flannel blanket from two same-size pieces of fabric. Choose coordinating prints or contrasting solids, or opt for a print and solid that complement one another. Select quality 100% cotton flannel for softness and durability. Make several blankets to use at home or to give as gifts. These no-sew blankets are so quick and easy, even the kids can help.
Things You'll Need
- Fabric for front
- Fabric for back
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Blue painter's tape
- Scissors
Instructions
-
-
1
Select two coordinating flannel prints and/or solids. Wash and dry both flannel fabrics to preshrink.
-
2
Cut both pieces of flannel 10 inches longer and 10 inches wider than the finished blanket size desired.
-
-
3
Lay one piece of flannel right side down on a flat surface, and smooth from the center to the edges.
-
4
Place the second piece of flannel right side up atop the first piece, with the edges even. Smooth into place to make the flannel layers stick together.
-
5
Place a line of blue painter's tape 5 inches from the edge, parallel to each side. Please note that the tape lines will cross 5 inches in from the corners.
-
6
Cut through both layers of flannel along the edges of the painter's tape closest to each corner, and remove a 5-inch square of fabric from each corner.
-
7
Cut straight lines perpendicular to the edge through both layers of flannel around the perimeter of the blanket. Space the lines about 1 inch apart and cut from the edge of the fabric to the edge of the blue painter's tape. Do not cut into, or through, the tape.
-
8
Tie together each fabric-strip pair that was formed by cutting through both layers of fabric. Use an overhand knot (see resources). Tie a second overhand knot on top of the first.
-
9
Carefully remove the painter's tape.
