How to Challenge a Welding Certification

How to Challenge a Welding Certification thumbnail
You may challenge welding certification denials.

To be certified, welders must pass an examination administered by the American Welding Society (AWS). The examination consists solely of a hands-on test, during which the applicant must demonstrate his ability to weld materials while conforming to safety standards. Certification is not required to work as a welder but may enhance a welder's career prospects and earning potential. A welder denied certification based on his failure to pass the exam may challenge the AWS's findings.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask for a retest. If your first attempt on the hands-on portion was unsuccessful, the AWS permits an immediate retest. During this immediate retest, you are given two attempts to complete the welding assignments that you previously failed.

    • 2

If, after this retest you still do not pass the hands-on portion, you are entitled to obtain more instruction and retake the test again after you provide the AWS with evidence of this additional instruction. The AWS requires you to obtain at least 40 additional hours of instruction prior to permitting a retest.

File a challenge with the AWS. If you failed the written portion of the exam, you can challenge its findings by writing a letter stating such. Upon receipt of this letter, the AWS will review your written exam and alter its findings, if necessary.
