How to Make Fairy Ears

How to Make Fairy Ears thumbnail
Making your own fantasy character ears changes up any old boring costume.

No matter what fantasy creature you're discussing, whether it's an elf, a hobbit, a Vulcan or a fairy, the most distinctive feature is the ears. Tilting up at the top with a little point on them, they peep out of the hair to immediately proclaim that your character's mystical origins. Making your own fairy ears is a fun way to change the look of your costume, making it memorable and distinct to whoever sees it.

  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the wooden block so that you can nail the end of the spoon into the wood, allowing the spoon to hang free without being touched. It is best if you use an old spoon with a hole already in the end. Arrange the newspapers so that they are under the block of wood, allowing for easy cleanup once the latex drips dry.

    • 2

Dip your tablespoon into the latex. It needs to be dipped halfway down the spoon and coated fairly well so that there are no gaps in the latex.

    • 3

Hang the spoon onto the nail and allow the latex to dry. It will drip down the top of the spoon, drying so that it comes to a point, forming your fairy ear. Use the blowdryer on the cold and lowest setting to help the latex dry faster.

    • 4

Dip again, and again and again until your ear is the thickness and consistency you need. Be sure that you dip a little less each time so that the part with the ear tip is thicker than the part nearer to the spoon.

    • 5

Allow the latex to dry completely.

    • 6

Powder the ear with the baby powder so that the latex doesn't stick to itself. Peel it carefully off the spoon, making sure your fingers are also powdered. Work it off the spoon and set onto the newspaper. Powder the inside of the ear and tap out the excess.

    • 7

Tuck your hair under the shower cap. Trim the latex so that it fits to the natural shape of your ear. Using the spirit gum, apply the latex so it adheres to your ear.

    • 8

Use the blending makeup or the wax to match the color of the latex to the color of your skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • The latex will be slightly stretchy. It will sit onto your ear, and only need a little spirit gum to attach it to your skin.

  • You can also apply the wax with the ear off, but the makeup might mess up a little while you apply the adhesive.

  • Do not touch the latex until it's dry, or you will have little fingerprints all over your ear.
