How to Start Peyote Beaded Bracelets

How to Start Peyote Beaded Bracelets thumbnail
Small cylindrical beads work well for peyote bracelets.

The peyote stitch is a versatile bead-weaving technique that gets easier to weave after you've stitched the first few rows. Follow just a few instructions to get the hang of the stitch and you'll be well on your way to creating your own peyote bracelet.

Things You'll Need

  • Pale pink beading thread (size B or D)
  • Size 10 beading needle
  • 3 g of amethyst cylinder beads
  • 2 g of turquoise cylinder beads
  • 2 g of matte silver cylinder beads
  • 3 g of light pink cylinder beads

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one end of the beading thread in each hand and reach both hands straight out from your sides. This will give you an arm-span length of beading thread which you will cut.

    • 2

Thread the beading needle, folding over a 6-inch tail of thread. Push the needle through a "stop bead" once or twice in the same direction. Pull the thread tight. Your "stop bead" can be any color as it is not meant to be part of the design. It simply is placed to stop other beads from falling off the thread.

    • 3

String beads through your needle in the following order: two amethyst, two pale pink, one matte silver, two turquoise, one matte silver, two pale pink and two amethyst. Slide all beads down against your stop bead.

    • 4

String an amethyst bead through your needle, taking care not to tangle your thread. Pass your needle through the first amethyst bead in the previous row.

    • 5

Thread a pale pink bead through your needle. Pass your needle through the second pale pink bead in the previous row.

    • 6

Thread a turquoise bead through your needle and pass it through the first turquoise bead in the previous row. At this point, you should be getting the hang of the peyote stitch. To continue, you will thread through every other bead in the previous row with a new, matching bead.

    • 7

Stop beading when you have about 8 inches of bare thread left on the needle. If you do not have enough beading for a bracelet, you will need to start a new thread. To end this row, pass your needle through the bead directly below the one you've stopped at, and then through the three beads diagonally. Tie a knot around the thread to secure it in place.

    • 8

Measure and cut a new arm-span length of thread. Thread it through the needle and thread the needle diagonally across three beads in your bracelet, ending at the last row. Pull the thread through until you have an 8-inch tail and begin weaving a new row.
