How to Make a Glow in the Dark Skeleton Costume

How to Make a Glow in the Dark Skeleton Costume thumbnail
Skeleton costumes are popular for Halloween.

Skeleton costumes are a classic Halloween costume choice. The costume can be made at home to save money or add a personal touch, such as glow-in-the-dark paint. The paint will also show up brightly under black lights if the costume is worn to a club or party with black lights, or to a haunted house or amusement park which also often have black lights for effect. The skeleton costume can be used with or without a mask, which can also be made glow-in-the-dark.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the black outfit, pants and top, on a clean work surface with the front of the outfit facing up. Use fabric chalk to sketch the skeletal system on the top and pants, copying the image from the picture of the skeletal system. A simple outline will suffice as detail can be added later.

    • 2

Paint the top, following the chalk sketch and using the picture as a guide, using the paint brush and glow in the dark fabric paint. When finished, paint the chalk outline on the pants in the same way, using the picture as a guide. If desired, allow the paint to dry then add a second coat. Allow the paint to dry completely, preferably for a full 24 hours.

    • 3

Turn the outfit over and repeat on the back of the top and pants, this time outlining in fabric chalk the back of the skeletal system. Paint with the glow in the dark paint as was done on the front, applying two coats if desired. Allow to dry completely.

    • 4

Lay the black ski mask face up on the work surface. Use the glow in the dark paint to paint the face of the skull on the mask, extending down and including neck bones as well, if desired. Use the opening for the eyes and mouth as guides for sizing the skull. The ski mask may require more than two coats of paint to get the same effect as the outfit. Allow to dry completely.

    • 5

Lay the socks with the bottom down on the clean work surface. Lay the gloves with the palm side down also. Using the glow in the dark paint, paint the hand and feet bones on the backs of the gloves and tops of the socks, respectively. As with the mask, these may require multiple coats and several drying sessions to get the desired effect with the paint. Allow to dry completely.

Adjust any glow in the dark paint mistakes with the black fabric paint. Additionally, use the black fabric paint to add detail. Allow to dry completely, for a full 24 hours, before wearing.
