How to Make a Stargate Costume
Stargate, beginning with the film in 1994 and expanding from the Stargate SG-1, which ran from 1997 until 2007, was an extremely successful military science-fiction franchise. The United States Air Force greatly supported the Stargate SG-1 series, including the guest appearances of two Air Force Generals in two episodes, playing themselves, and an award given to actor Richard Dean Anderson for his role as Jack O'Neill on the show which the Air Force said presented a "continuous positive depiction of the Air Force." Anderson was also made an honorary brigadier general in the Air Force.
Things You'll Need
- Olive green or dark blue combat uniform (military surplus)
- Black t-shirt
- Medic or tactical vest (black)
- Leg holster
- Stargate pacthes
- Large pieces of velcro in olive or black
- Needle and thread
- Black tactical or combat boots
- Black baseball cap or olive green patrol cap
- Toy or paintball guns (9mm pistol, P90 assault rifle)

Place the Stargate patches on the back of the velcro one side at a time and trace the outer edge of the patches. Carefully cut out the shapes, matching to the individual patches. Then repeat with the other side of the velcro.

Stitch the Stargate patches onto the hook (rough) side of the velcro, stitching along the outer edge of the patches and connecting to the back of the hook velcro side, also stitching along the edge. Do this for the unit and command patches, which will be attached to the jacket of the uniform. An optional additional patch would be the round Air Force emblem.

Line the loop sides of the cut-outs from the velcro on the sides of the arms of the jacket. Place the unit patch on one sleeve a couple of inches below the left sleeve seam where the sleeve meets the shoulder, and the command patch will go in the same location but on the right sleeve. If using the Air Force emblem patch, place this below the Stargate Command patch.

Stitch the loop side of the velcro cut-outs in place on the sleeves of the uniform, using the needle and thread to stitch around the outer edges of the velcro pieces. Take care not to stitch the sleeve shut accidentally by catching the underside of the sleeve fabric with the needle when stitching.

Put on the combat uniform, either blue or olive green, as it would normally be worn. Blouse the ends of the trousers with boot-blousers, or tie the strings at the hem of the pants to bunch them up slightly. Wear the black t-shirt and button the uniform shirt over it. If desired, cuff the sleeves of the uniform shirt. Tucking the shirt in is optional. Put on the boots.

Place the vest on and zip up the front. If desired, fill the pockets with props such as walkie-talkies, old military surplus gear, or other items that add to the appearance and realism of the costume.

Put on the leg holster, attaching to belt as per instructions. Place the toy or paintball 9mm pistol into the holster. Another alternative is to attach a prop combat knife to the holster.

Apply the patches to the proper velcro pieces on the jacket, centering with the shoulder seam so the patches are on straight. Put on the cap and grab the toy or paintball P90 gun and the costume is complete.
