How to Make a Hollow Ichigo Costume

Save

Bleach is a popular japanese animated TV show, or anime as it is more commonly called, featuring heros and villains with otherworldly abilities. You can make a costume mask to pay homage to Ichigo, the protagonist of the show. Besides being a Soul Reaper, Ichigo can call on the power of the evil "Hollows" as well -- turning his face into a mask that reflects this ability. Build the mask from paper mache which does not involve any dangerous chemicals and which requires a few supplies that can be gotten from a hobby store or arts and crafts supply. Some ability at drawing will help as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Bleach DVD
  • Tracing paper
  • Grease pencil
  • Newspaper
  • Party balloon
  • 2 glass bowls
  • Wax paper
  • Paper Mache mix
  • Cellophane tape
  • Colored pens
  • Pin
  • Utility knife
  • Elastic cord
  • Bonding glue
  • Rent or buy a DVD of Bleach. Freeze-frame Ichigo's face when he has a Hollows mask on. Place tracing paper on the TV and trace the mask with a grease pencil. Tear sheets of newspaper into strips -- the strips should be at least an inch wide and six or seven inches long.

  • Blow up the balloon. Stop blowing when the size of the balloon approximates the size of the head of the person who will be wearing the Ichigo Hollows mask. Tie a knot in the neck of the balloon to keep the air from escaping.

  • Place a sheet of newspaper on a table to protect the surface. Place a glass bowl face down on the newspaper. Cover the glass bowl with a strip of wax paper.

  • Pour the paper mache mix in a glass bowl. Add the specified amount of tap water that the instructions list. Stir the mixture with your finger until it reaches a paste-like consistency. Wipe your finger on a paper towel. Place the balloon, neck down, on the bowl.

  • Moisten a strip of newspaper in the mixture and apply it to one side of the balloon. Smooth the strip down with your fingers. Continue this procedure until you have covered one side of the balloon with the strips. Let the paper mache set for two hours. Apply a second coating of paper strips in the same fashion to the side of the balloon. Let the paper mache dry while you clean out the glass bowl with tap water.

  • Tape the tracing paper to the paper mache side of the balloon with strips of cellophane tape. Color the mask with the colored pens. Stick a pin in the balloon to pop it. Pull the balloon remnants off the paper mache mask.

  • Punch through the two eyes on the face of your Ichigo Hollow mask with the blade of a utility knife. Put the mask face down on the newspaper. Push one end of the elastic cord through the left edge of the mask. Push the other end of the elastic cord through the right edge of the mask.

  • Turn the mask over. Apply a drop of bonding glue to each hole to adhere the cord to the mask. Let the bonding glue set for four hours before putting on the mask.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can spray the surface of your mask with a clear sealant to protect the colors from running.
  • Do not let children or small pets get into the paper mache mixture as it will make them sick.
