How to Stop Smoking When Drinking

How to Stop Smoking When Drinking thumbnail
Breaking the associaton between drinking and smoking is the first step.

The benefits of smoking cessation are well documented. Improved breathing and circulation, lowered blood pressure, improved senses of taste and smell and you stop smelling like an ashtray are some of the most tangible benefits. However, quitting smoking can be difficult for a number of reasons, possibly, the biggest of which, is alcohol consumption. The association with drinking and smoking is incredibly difficult to break, and alcohol consumption increases the likelihood of relapse after quitting. Each person's quitting program must take into account the individual, but quitting is possible, it just takes determination and willpower.

Instructions

  1. Breaking the Association

    • 1

Choose a day to stop and get rid of all tobacco products from your home, work and car.

    • 2

Inform friends and family that you intend to quit so they can support you when you feel tempted. Accountability contributes greatly towards your ability to stick with the program you've set to quit.

    • 3

Drink at bars, or places at parties, where smoking is prohibited. If smoking is taking place outside, stay inside.

    • 4

Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink. Don't drink so much that you lose control of your willpower and inhibitions.

    • 5

Chew gum, suck on mints, or eat bar nuts to help break the oral fixation.

    • 6

Do something active, like go for a walk, if you feel tempted to smoke.

Tips & Warnings

  • The first night of drinking without smoking can be the hardest; after that, it gets easier.

  • When you feel tempted, think of all the reasons you decided to quit in the first place.

  • Don't think that "One won't hurt," because it can undo all the work you've done towards quitting.
