My Camera's Memory Card Won't Format

Not all misbehaving memory cards need to be thrown out.

Memory cards are essential to the operation of digital cameras. Without one, the camera's internal memory typically only holds a handful of pictures and is not convenient. When switching from one camera to another, a memory card typically needs to be formatted so that it saves in the proper directory and can be read by the new camera. Failure or inability to format the card may lead to unsuccessful saves and thus disappointment. While memory cards are usually inexpensive, there are ways to attempt to save an older one before giving up and buying a new one.

Things You'll Need

• Camera that the memory card is designed for
• Q-tip
• Rubbing alcohol
• Computer
• Memory card reader

Instructions

1. Remove the memory card from the camera and inspect the card itself. Look for any obvious damage. If the card is damaged, replace it.

2. Check the card's contacts for any notable smudges. If they are dirty, wipe them clean with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. Use the dry end of the Q-tip to dry the contacts once they are cleaned.

3. Check for a lock switch on the card. These are typically only present on Secure Digital (SD) cards. There will be a picture of a lock next to the switch. Ensure that the card is in the unlocked position.

4. Insert the memory card into the camera and power the camera on. In the camera's settings, look for the format option. Confirm that you would like to format the card. If this is still unsuccessful, go back into the formatting menu and look for different options, such as a low-level format or a quick format. Try these options as well.

5. Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a standalone memory card reader or one built into a computer. In Windows, go to the Start menu and then to "Computer." Look for the memory card in the list displayed. Right-click the icon for the memory card and select "Format." Uncheck "Quick Format" and click "Start."

6. Reinsert the memory card into the camera and try to format it in the camera again. If it still fails, it would be best to replace that memory card.

Tips & Warnings

• Always have a spare card around, just in case. You never know when one might fail or when you will be unable to unload the pictures from a full card.

• Formatting a memory card erases all information from the card. Make sure that you have no important files on the card that you haven't already backed up.
