Sauerkraut is a fully cooked, pickled condiment created from cabbage, vinegar and various spices. The word sauerkraut is of German origin and means pickled cabbage. You can enjoy it cold or at room temperature, as a relish or a side dish. Sauerkraut has a firm texture. There might be times when you want to warm it or cook it along with other dishes, such as sausage or potatoes. Boiling sauerkraut gives it a softer texture. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Place the sauerkraut in a saucepan, and add 1 cup water or broth for each cup of sauerkraut. Add more as necessary to prevent the sauerkraut from drying out. You also don't want so much water that it leaves your sauerkraut tasting bland.

      Place the saucepan on the stove, and turn the heat up as high as it can go without reaching outside the edges of the pan.

      Boil the sauerkraut for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the desired texture is reached. Remove the sauerkraut with a slotted spoon to serve.
